How it works

Zulu time is Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), the one clock that aviation, weather services and shipping use everywhere, so that a flight plan or a weather report means the same moment in every country. The letter Z marks the zero time zone, and Zulu is its word in the ICAO spelling alphabet. Times are written on the 24-hour clock with four digits and a Z, such as 1430Z.

Local time is UTC plus the zone's offset: local = UTC + offset, and UTC = local − offset. The offset changes with daylight saving time, which is why the date matters. Example: 1430Z on 1 July is 17:30 in Helsinki, because Finnish summer time is UTC+3; in January it would be 16:30 (UTC+2). Weather reports and NOTAMs add the day of the month in front: 011430Z is the 1st at 14:30 UTC. Sources: ICAO Annex 5 (UTC), ICAO Annex 3 and WMO No. 306 (the METAR day-time group) and the IANA time zone database.

The current time comes from this device's clock, which can be off by a few seconds or more; it is not an official time signal. When clocks go back, one local hour happens twice and the first one is shown; when clocks go forward, one local hour does not exist at all.

Frequently asked questions

Is Zulu time the same as GMT?

In practice, yes: GMT and UTC differ by less than a second. UK local time is GMT only in winter; in summer the UK uses BST, which is UTC+1.

Does Zulu time change for daylight saving time?

No. UTC never changes; only local times move. That is why pilots and forecasters use it: a Zulu time means the same moment all year round.

What does 131430Z mean in a METAR or NOTAM?

It is the day of the month and the time in UTC: the 13th at 14:30 Zulu. The month and year are understood from the context.

How do I say Zulu time on the radio?

Say the four digits one by one, for example "one four three zero Zulu". Within the same hour, controllers may give only the minutes.

Can the UTC date differ from my local date?

Yes. Near midnight, converting to or from UTC can move the date to the previous or next day.
