How to use

  1. Measure your packed bag standing up: height, width and depth, wheels and handles included. Add its weight if you have a scale.
  2. Under Limits, pick an airline or type the limits you were given: the three sides, the total L + W + H, the weight, or any of them.
  3. Read the verdict: each side, the total and the weight show how much is over or to spare, and the drawing shows where the bag sticks out.

How it works

A bag fits a size limit when each of its sides fits. You may turn the bag, so the checker compares its longest side with the longest allowed side, the middle with the middle and the thinnest with the thinnest. That is exactly how a bag goes into an airport sizer box: upright, in the best way round.

Some limits are a total instead: the length, width and height added up, often called linear dimensions. For checked bags, Qatar Airways allows 158 cm in total on some routes and Delta 62 in (157 cm). Example: a 75 × 50 × 30 cm suitcase totals 155 cm and fits 158 cm; an 80 × 50 × 30 cm one totals 160 cm, 2 cm too much. Inches and pounds are converted exactly: 1 in = 2.54 cm and 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg (NIST SP 811).

Airline limits in the cabin baggage table are read from each airline's own website, with the date they were checked. Airlines change their rules and fares, aircraft and routes can differ, and a full flight can still move a cabin bag to the hold, so check your booking before you fly. Soft bags squeeze a little; the checker measures them as you enter them.

Frequently asked questions

Which cabin bag size fits most airlines?

Look at the table's last column: it shows which airlines' cabin bag limits your own bag fits. The sizes differ more than you might think: 55 × 40 × 23 cm is the most common, but KLM and Air France allow 55 × 35 × 25 cm, so a 40 cm wide bag is too wide for them.

What is a personal item?

A small bag that goes under the seat in front of you, such as a handbag, a laptop bag or a small backpack. Most European airlines allow 40 × 30 × 15 cm; Ryanair, Wizz Air and Vueling 40 × 30 × 20 cm. Low-cost fares often include only this bag, and the larger cabin bag costs extra.

How current are these limits?

Each row was read from the airline's own website on the date shown, and we re-check every row each quarter. Airlines change their rules, so check your booking before you fly.
