Check EU 261 and UK 261: €250–600 or £220–520 for a late, cancelled or overbooked flight, with the reason.
How to use
- Choose what happened: you arrived late, the flight was cancelled, or you were denied boarding.
- Enter the departure airport and your final destination as IATA codes (HEL, LHR). For a connecting trip on one booking, use the first departure and the last arrival.
- Enter how late you arrived at the final destination, or for a cancellation the days of notice and the replacement flight's times.
- Under Airline and date, set where the operating airline is licensed and the flight date if it was not today.
Compensation by flight distance
| Flight distance | EU 261 | UK 261 | Halved if a replacement arrives within |
|---|---|---|---|
| up to 1,500 km | €250 | £220 | 2 h |
| 1,500–3,500 km | €400 | £350 | 3 h |
| over 3,500 km | €600 | £520 | 4 h |
| over 1,500 km within the EU | €400 | £350 | 3 h |
Great-circle distance from the first departure to the final destination. Flights within the EU over 1,500 km get the middle amount; a delay of 3 to 4 hours on a flight over 3,500 km gets half.
How it works
EU Regulation 261/2004 gives air passengers a fixed sum when they reach their final destination three hours or more late, when a flight is cancelled at short notice, or when they are bumped from an overbooked flight. It covers every flight leaving the EU, Iceland, Norway or Switzerland, and flights into the EU on an EU airline. Since 2021 the UK has its own copy, UK 261, with amounts in pounds.
The amount depends only on the great-circle distance: €250 up to 1,500 km, €400 from 1,500 to 3,500 km (and for any longer flight within the EU), and €600 beyond (UK 261: £220, £350 and £520). It is halved when a replacement flight gets you there within 2, 3 or 4 hours of the original time for those three bands, and for a delay of 3 to 4 hours on a flight over 3,500 km. Example: Helsinki to London is about 1,845 km, so a 3 h 20 min late arrival gives €400.
The regulation itself only mentions cancellations; the EU Court of Justice ruled in Sturgeon (C-402/07, 2009) that a delay of three hours or more is compensated the same way, and in Folkerts (C-11/11) that the delay counts at the final destination. The airline owes nothing for a delay or cancellation caused by extraordinary circumstances it could not avoid with all reasonable measures, such as storms or air traffic control restrictions, but ordinary technical faults (Wallentin-Hermann, C-549/07) and strikes by its own staff (Krüsemann, C-195/17) don't count.

Frequently asked questions
How late does my flight have to be for compensation?
Three hours or more at your final destination, measured when at least one door opens after landing (Germanwings, C-452/13). A late departure alone doesn't count.
Does EU 261 apply to a non-EU airline?
Yes, on flights leaving an EU airport. On flights into the EU from outside, only EU-licensed airlines are covered.
What about connecting flights?
On one booking, the whole journey counts: the distance from the first departure to the final destination, and the delay at the final destination, even if the late leg was outside the EU (Wegener, C-537/17).
Is bad weather an extraordinary circumstance?
Usually, if it made the flight unsafe or closed the airport. The airline must prove it, and it must have taken all reasonable measures, such as rerouting you as soon as possible.
How long do I have to claim?
The regulation sets no deadline, so national time limits apply, for example three years in Finland and six years in England and Wales. Claim soon anyway: evidence is easier to find.
Do I still get meals and a hotel?
Yes. Care during the wait (meals, drinks and a hotel when needed) and a refund or new flight after a cancellation are owed even when extraordinary circumstances cancel the compensation.
I volunteered to give up my seat. Can I claim?
No fixed compensation: volunteers get the benefits they agree with the airline instead, plus a refund or a new flight.
