Turn a finish time into a pace and speed, or a pace into a finish time, with splits for every kilometre or mile.

How to use

  1. Choose whether you know your finish time, your pace or your speed.
  2. Enter the distance (or tap 5K, 10K, half marathon or marathon) and the value you know.
  3. Read the pace or finish time, the same effort in km and miles, and the time at each mark.

How it works

Pace is how long one kilometre or mile takes you, and speed is how far you go in an hour. They describe the same effort, so one can always be turned into the other. Pace is the favourite of runners, because it tells you what to hold on your watch to reach a goal time.

Pace = time ÷ distance, and speed = distance ÷ time. For example, 10 km in 50 minutes is 50 ÷ 10 = 5:00 per km, which is 10 ÷ (50 ÷ 60) = 12 km/h. A mile is exactly 1.609344 km, so 5:00 per km is about 8:03 per mile. A marathon is 42.195 km and a half marathon is 21.0975 km.

The calculator assumes you hold the same pace the whole way. Real races have hills, wind, a fast start or a slow finish, so treat the splits as a plan to aim for, not a promise. Pace values are rounded to the nearest second.

Worked example

What pace covers 5 km in 30 minutes?

  1. Pace: 30 ÷ 5 = 6 minutes per kilometre.

The equivalent speed is 10 km/h.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert min/km to min/mile?

Multiply the pace by 1.609344. A pace of 5:00 per km is 5:00 × 1.609344 = 8:03 per mile. Choose a finish time, pace or speed above and both are shown.

What pace do I need for a sub-4-hour marathon?

Enter 4 hours and the marathon distance. It comes to about 5:41 per km, or 9:09 per mile, held for the whole race.

Why does the last row of the splits not end on a whole number?

Most race distances do not end on a whole kilometre or mile. The last row is the exact finish distance, such as 42.195 km for a marathon.

Does the finish estimate allow for hills or fatigue?

No. It assumes the same pace throughout. Hills, stops and fatigue can change your actual finish time.

Can I use this for walking?

Yes. Pace, speed and time use the same arithmetic for walking. Enter the distance and time or pace you expect.
