How to use

  1. Choose whether you know your finish time, your pace or your speed.
  2. Enter the distance (or tap 5K, 10K, half marathon or marathon) and the value you know.
  3. Read the pace or finish time, the same effort in km and miles, and the time at each mark.

How it works

Pace is how long one kilometre or mile takes you, and speed is how far you go in an hour. They describe the same effort, so one can always be turned into the other. Pace is the favourite of runners, because it tells you what to hold on your watch to reach a goal time.

Pace = time ÷ distance, and speed = distance ÷ time. For example, 10 km in 50 minutes is 50 ÷ 10 = 5:00 per km, which is 10 ÷ (50 ÷ 60) = 12 km/h. A mile is exactly 1.609344 km, so 5:00 per km is about 8:03 per mile. A marathon is 42.195 km and a half marathon is 21.0975 km.

The calculator assumes you hold the same pace the whole way. Real races have hills, wind, a fast start or a slow finish, so treat the splits as a plan to aim for, not a promise. Pace values are rounded to the nearest second.

Worked example

What pace covers 5 km in 30 minutes?

  1. Pace: 30 ÷ 5 = 6 minutes per kilometre.

The equivalent speed is 10 km/h.

Frequently asked questions

What pace do I need to finish under 3, 3:30 or 4:30 hours?

Under 3 hours needs 4:15 per km (6:51 per mile), under 3:30 4:58 per km (8:00 per mile) and under 4:30 6:23 per km (10:17 per mile). Paces are rounded, so 4:16 per km gives 3:00:02, just over.

Should I run even or negative splits?

Most coaches advise an even pace, or a second half slightly faster than the first (a negative split). Starting faster than your goal pace usually costs more time late in the race than it gains early.
